Masking: The skincare term for using a face mask and a trend that you’ll have no doubt come across on social media.

It is a fun and beneficial way to treat the skin and is fast becoming a step in our skincare that shouldn’t be missed.

Whether you are after a skin detox, a radiance boost, acne control or a drink of water for the skin - there is a formula and a face mask ready and waiting to do just the job. From sheet masks, jelly masks, clay and gel masks, you have many to choose from. The mask formula for you may depend on a few factors, for example your lifestyle - if you are time-poor then an overnight mask that you can lather on maybe the easiest option. But if you have committed to #selfcearesunday then a sheet mask that works its magic after 20 minutes while taking a soak in the bath will be a real treat for you and your skin.

Typically masking will only need to be performed once a week - although I personally break the rules and often will mask twice a week! There is no harm in doing so but do check for active ingredients as you want to avoid over stimulate the skin.

Enzyme masks will help with congested skin types but are also great for resurfacing, so helping with the texture of the skin and really great for anti-ageing and brightening.

I know what’s running through your mind right now… ‘How do i choose a mask?!’ Well this is the tricky part as we have so many to choose from, all providing many benefits. I would simply think about what you need to enhance your skin, for example in the colder months your skin may need a hydration blast or if your skin is dull and lacklustre, a radiance boost would be beneficial. I would recommend a sheet mask for these kind of concerns as they are saturated in hydrating ingredients that soak into the skin. If you are struggling with congestion or spots, a clay mask will help clear the skin absorbing excess oil and drawing out impurities. Enzyme masks will help with congested skin types but are also great for resurfacing, so helping with the texture of the skin and really great for anti-ageing and brightening.

The next question you may have is ‘What if i have more than one concern i’d like to treat or a combined skin type?!’ Well this leads me nicely onto Multi-Masking. You got it… use multiple masks! Apply 2 or maybe 3! Have some fun and get creative treating different areas of the face with a mask that’s relevant - not all areas of the skin have to be treated with the same product. For example, If you are suffering around the chin and jaw line with mask-induced acne but your cheeks and forehead are dull and dehydrated, apply a clarifying or clay mask to the chin and jawline and for the rest of the skin pop on a nice thirst-quenching gel mask.

Masks are also a non-commital way of testing new ingredients on the skin, if you have always wanted to try an active ingredient like glycolic or retinol, a mask formula is a great way to try them out.

This sums up masking and how fun and fantastic your self-care Sunday can be! For more masking advice, do not hesitate to contact Krystal or find her on social media for more skin and beauty tips.
