Busting The Lash Extension Myth!

lash-extension-myth.jpg

There is a common myth suggesting that natural lashes are damaged by lash extensions. As a trusted beauty expert and lash technician of almost twenty years, I would like to set the record straight.

Your natural lashes will not be damaged from lash enhancements! Yay – I hear you say! So, if our lashes aren’t damaged by lash extensions, why do we find them on our pillows, on our carpets, in the fridge? I have actually found a lash in the fridge! Here’s why:

Naturally our lashes fall out. It’s as simple as that! Just like the hairs on our head, our lashes shed – in fact, each lash has a cycle of roughly six weeks. We don’t notice our natural lashes shedding as they are smaller and finer. However, with a longer, thicker, darker extension adhered to the natural lash, we will of course notice it more – but there is no evidence to suggest that those lash extensions are causing damage to your natural lashes. When a lash sheds, a new one grows in its place, hence the need for maintenance.

Despite all of this, lash enhancements do need to be applied in the correct way and performed by a trained technician. It may also be the case that if lashes are applied too thick or heavy, if too much adhesive is applied or if incorrect lashes are selected, then our natural lashes can be damaged before the natural shedding occurs. This can result in broken or shorter lashes. If you have experienced premature lash loss, just remember – a new lash will grow back. Taking breaks from lash extensions is also recommended from time-to-time to maintain healthy eyes and lashes.

As with any industry, there are providers with improper training, which is unfortunately giving the industry a bad reputation. I’d suggest to anyone looking to get lash extensions, to do so with a reputable salon or brand. This is especially important because this type of service works closely to the eyes, so being mindful of the products and procedure is very important.

So, if you are someone with reservations about lash extensions, hopefully you have more of an understanding and we have busted the lash extension myth!
