man in the mirror.
From the depths of ‘Brotox’ to the modern Male ‘MANicures’ – bolting on a manly prefix onto these ladies-only treatments are attracting the attention of many men.
Getting caught in your wife’s bathroom cupboard was getting a little risky, right guys? Not anymore and to be honest, men have their own bathroom cupboard full of skincare products and grooming essentials. So it is completely acceptable to drop a bit of your hard-earned cash on your hard-worked body, women do so why shouldn’t men?!
Working within beauty salons myself for the past 18 years I have seen a gradual increase in men having treatments the past few, speaking to my Male guests I was keen to find out why they thought more men have not or do not treat themselves. Majority of them said they don’t like the idea of walking into the female environment, plus the daunting influx of women in and out. Although this could be the idea of heaven to some, to others it could feel pretty intimidating and some what ‘girly’. Although It could feel that way stepping into a salon, once you take the first step through the door and start the Journey through your treatment, that’s all soon forgotten!
“Being well groomed can be a sign of maturity as it reflects to the outside world how a man views himself.”
I also find it fascinating examining the marketing used to make men feel comfortable in applying and using skin, body and make-up products. The packaging and branding is perhaps an attempt to appeal to men – in some men’s minds, if it’s labelled ‘For Men’ it’s ok to use right?! I mean skin is skin (to me – a skin specialist) so lots of products are available for both men and women alike but if that manly prefix or that blue box of exfoliant makes the modern man more accepting to use it then I am all for the appealing marketing. I think any kind of skin care is important and better than none at all.
I am personally very excited about the Male beauty boom and to encourage more men to visit my Health + Beauty salon I have added a page to my treatment menu just ‘For Men’ – I hope this will make it clear what treatments are readily available and I hope to see more Male guests through the door.
Being well groomed can be a sign of maturity as it reflects to the outside world how a man views himself. It also comes across as disciplined, confident and respectful rather than vain and self-obsessed.
Who could blame the guys for wanting to just look and feel good?
