treat your skin from within.

I dislike that phrase ‘you are what you eat’ but it is kind of true!

Is it really important to take a good look at that fried chicken or that sugar sprinkled doughnut or even those 3 espresso martinis before they touch your lips, because realistically that is what each cell in your body is made up of! I must admit my downfall is Haribo - shhhhh keep that to yourself! And moving on swiftly...

Along with fresh, healthy, nutritious foods, we know that hydrating your body is also one of the most important things you can - but do you know why?

As babies we are approximately 75 percent water, that is why most of us looked like the Michelin Man - chubby, plump and full of hydration! But by the time we reach a year old that drops by 10 percent. As we start to grow older our cells loose their ability to hold on to water. So by the time we are adults we drop considerably to around 55-60 percent water and that is when we start to notice the signs of ageing.

Think of our cells like grapes, they are all fresh, firm and juicy but as the days pass and those grapes are exposed to the elements, they start to age and start to loose the plumpness. They become smaller in size, shrivelled, more like a raisin - see where I’m going with this?!

It’s not just age that can have an effect on our cells losing water, health issues, diseases, free-radicals, stress and inflammation can attack our cell membrane and if this is compromised water starts leaking out. Again think back to our grapes, if you pierced them with a pin, water would be released. Cells can die altogether which can also compromise our health, making it highly important to look after the cells in our body.

So the key measures of health is each and every cell’s ability to hold water and that is why I am passionate about putting cellular hydration first.

80% of how our skin looks on the outside is supported internally

That leads me nicely onto anti-ageing and we are all worried about that for sure and there are many causes. We have internal ageing, things like poor diet, lack of sleep, cultural stress (I believe this to be the biggest culprit of our modern day). Then we have external elements of ageing, the sun, pollution and the environmental aggressors – these all lead to cellular dehydration.

I believe in following a connected beauty approach to skincare, approximately 80 percent of how our skin looks on the outside is supported internally, so fill up with water-rich foods, leading a stress-free, healthier lifestyle will all contribute. Then you have external support with topical skincare products which will treat the other 20 percent.

With this in mind, I truly believe we can resist and reverse the ageing process – so get treating your skin from within!
